Board rejects Ford’s call for in-person graduations

The Trillium Lakelands Board of Education has decided to stand their ground on their decision to host virtual graduations for their Grade 8 and Grade 12 students.

Director of education Wes Hahn told trustees that the planning for these events has been going on for months, the provincial recommendation for in-person outdoor graduations came too late and that after discussions with the two local health units, the board was told in-person outdoor graduations would be unsafe.

Health unit encourages caution with move to reopening

As the province lifts a number of COVID-19 restrictions for some stores, services and activities in coming days, the local health unit asks people to continue staying safe every step of the way. 

As of 12:01 am on Friday (June 11), Ontario will enter Step 1 of its Roadmap to Reopen. In this first step, non-essential retailers will be able to reopen for limited in-person shopping, limited outdoor dining on restaurant patios will be allowed, more outdoor activities like camping, fitness classes and religious services can resume, and outdoor gathering sizes will double to up to 10 people.

Children’s summer outreach lunch program is back at King Albert, Queen Victoria

Last year, 328 free lunches were given out to elementary kids in Lindsay through Kawartha Lakes Food Source and its partners’ summer lunch program – but they’re hoping to reach even more children this year.

From June 16 to Aug. 20, the school lunch program will be distributing lunches at King Albert Public School from (11 a.m. to Noon) and at Queen Victoria Public School (12:30-1:30 p.m.) on Wednesdays and Fridays, two of Lindsay’s more economically challenged catchment areas.

King Albert principal sad to leave, says school is in good hands

For the last four years, Dean Burke has enjoyed every minute he has been the principal of King Albert Public School in Lindsay. With the help of staff, students, parents and community partners Burke has worked very hard to make King Albert a place his students want to be.

Burke, a King Albert graduate himself, began teaching in 2009, and made the transition into administration as the “teacher in charge” at Our Lady of Fatima in Longlac, Ontario in 2014.
